A MINISTERIAL group has been established as part of government efforts to progress online safety policies.

The group, comprising the Children’s, Education, Health, Economic Development and Justice and Home Affairs ministers, will meet on a quarterly basis.

Its formation comes in the wake of a review by the Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel last year, looking at online safety with a focus on the safeguards available to children and young people.

The review culminated in a report and a range of recommendations, including that the government should prioritise the development of a comprehensive online safety strategy.

The terms of reference for the Online Safety Policy Ministerial Group states that: “The Council of Ministers welcomes the work of the Children, Education and Home Affairs Panel’s report on this important policy area.

“It is a compelling and constructive contribution which underlines the importance of cross ministerial action and engagement with industry, parents and families.

“The formation of a ministerial group and allocated lead minister for this policy area reflects the continued importance given to the subject matter.”

Online poll

Earlier this week, ministers signalled support “in principle” for restricting smartphone and social media use by under-16s.

Islanders can take part in an online poll on the subject via the JEP website.
