DRIVERS are being urged to avoid Bagot Road following a suspected gas leak in the area.

Island Energy confirmed that its engineers are currently working on site.

A spokesperson for the utility company said: “We were made aware of a suspected gas escape on Bagot Road earlier today.

“Our engineers acted quickly to investigate and are currently working on site.”

A section of the road has been excavated, with temporary lights in operation.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area or find an alternative route.

The spokesperson added: “We are working as quickly as possible to rectify the situation safely and will have traffic restrictions removed at the earliest opportunity.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind Islanders that if they smell gas or suspect a gas escape to call our 24-hour emergency line on 01534 755555.”
