AN Islander involved in the original stitching of the Occupation Tapestry has returned 30 years later to take part in the reimagining of the original artwork.
Anne-Marie Willing, who was part of the team that stitched the St Peter panel three decades ago, said she was “delighted” to be involved in the project after being invited to take part in workshops earlier this year.
She arrived armed with albums and memorabilia from the original effort – items she has kept at home since the original tapestry was created.
“It was lovely to reminisce and meet some of the other tapestry workers again,” she said.
“I’m not a painter, nor an expert in needlework, but I enjoyed being part of both projects.
“I’m pleased that my albums and memorabilia may now be cared for at Jersey Archive to help tell the story behind the tapestry.”
The project forms part of Jersey Heritage’s programme commemorating the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s liberation and the 30th anniversary of the tapestry itself.
Ms Willing’s involvement was highlighted at last night’s opening of Colour our Collection at the Maritime Museum, where the 12 new panels were unveiled and displayed alongside the original 1995 tapestries.
She was one of several original stitchers who returned to contribute to the eight-month project, which involved more than 100 Islanders producing 12 large-scale acrylic paintings.
A total of 55 workshops were held in parish halls and community venues, supported by groups including the Youth Service, La Moye Prison and Maison Belleville.
Jersey Heritage outreach curator Melissa Rodrigues, who led the initiative, said the exhibition marked both the 80th anniversary of Liberation and the 30th anniversary of the original tapestry.
“With Islanders’ help, we have 12 beautiful and colourful paintings to mark two special anniversaries in the Island’s history,” she said.
The pop-up exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm until 11 December.
Usual museum entry fees apply, with free admission for Jersey Heritage members and children under six.
