A LOCAL author will be hosting a football-themed family morning at Jersey Library on Saturday – including a reading from his new novel which celebrates the growing interest in women’s sport.
James Hewlett’s latest release Izzy Harvey: Rise of the Falcons centres on the title character living in the shadow of her football star brother Jack, and her drive to be noticed for her own footballing abilities as she, and her team, compete in an national inter-schools cup competition.
Mr Hewlett, who also wrote the Jack Harvey series of books, is inviting young Islanders and families to wear their favourite team’s shirt to the Library where there will be a football quiz and a design your own football strip activity.
The author said that the novel is designed to give young girls the “same thrilling, feel-good, high-stakes stories that boys have enjoyed for decades”.
He said: “For all the progress, something crucial is still missing: stories. Books aimed at aspiring young female athletes remain few and far between. Girls aged eight to 14 – those formative years when belief is either built or broken – rarely see themselves reflected in the sports fiction they read.”
“I firmly believe sport is for everyone. There should be no barriers – cultural, social or structural – stopping anyone from playing a game loved by millions.”
The event is being held between 11am and 1pm on Saturday.
