TWO experienced local boaters have been praised for their quick actions after they helped avoid a tragedy at the weekend.
Ian Tardivel and his friend Ken Journeaux didn’t hesitate to launch Mr Tardivel’s boat when they spotted three people – including a young child – in trouble on a paddleboard west of Grève de Lecq on Saturday and brought them safely back to shore.
In a statement, Jersey Coastguard said that RNLI beach lifeguards had also been monitoring the situation and had launched a rescue board.
“The fire service IRB [inshore rescue boat] was tasked to assist, and a Coastguard mobile unit proceeded to the scene,” the statement continued.
“As these assets were arriving on scene the beach lifeguards reported that the casualty was being brought back to shore by a passing boat. All were landed at Greve De Lecq safe and well.”
Speaking to the JEP, Mr Tardivel said: “It was one of those situations where you act on instinct.
“We know the waters very well – they were so lucky it wasn’t rough.”
The duo’s actions were praised on the St Ouen’s residents’ Facebook page.
“We’re lucky to have guys like you,” one Islander wrote.
“Wow. Brilliant job guys. True heroes,” another added.
Jersey Coastguard also thanked “all those involved in this incident for their assistance in returning the casualties safely to shore” and issued a reminder to users of inflatable watercraft “of the importance of considering weather and tidal conditions, as well as the use of appropriate personal protection equipment, before leaving the shore”.
