A Blue Islands passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport yesterday following a technical issue.

The ATR 72 aircraft (registration G-ISLO), which took off around 15:00, landed safely despite battling strong crosswinds of up to 30mph.

Emergency crews were scrambled as a precaution after the landing, which was captured on YouTube by channel Airport Action and shared on social media.

Video: Blue Islands confirmed to Express that the incident was a technical issue, rather than an engine failure, as an aviation YouTube channel and online commentators had suggested.

They escorted the plane down the runway after it briefly veered off the centreline.

A Blue Islands spokesperson explained that the flight crew received a “cockpit indication of a technical issue” shortly after departing from Birmingham.

They then followed standard operating procedures to deal with that issue.

“These procedures have an abundance of caution built into them to ensure passenger safety,” the spokesperson said.

They added that the aircraft is now “being attended to by our engineers”.

The airline added that it had worked to “minimise the impact to customers, with hotel and meals provided”, and passengers scheduled to travel on a service from Birmingham to Jersey on Monday afternoon.

At the time of writing, footage of the emergency landing had received nearly 30,000 views on YouTube.

The crew were praised by online aviation enthusiasts on social media for their “exceptional airmanship” during the incident.
