JERSEY Overseas Aid is donating £300,000 to help with the emergency response in Myanmar after a major earthquake struck the country last week.
The 7.7 magnitude quake hit central Myanmar last Friday and has killed more than 3,000 people in the country.
Many others are still missing or injured, while damage to roads, hospitals, bridges and utilities is making it hard for aid teams to reach those in need.
The disaster has added to the strain on millions of people already facing the effects of long-term conflict, economic instability and climate-related shocks.
JOA – the Island’s publicly-funded relief and development agency – announced that it had allocated £100,000 each to the British Red Cross, People in Need and Age International.
The funding will allow the British Red Cross to support its sister organisation, the Myanmar Red Cross, in delivering first aid, distributing emergency supplies and deploying mobile health teams to affected areas.
People in Need will use the funds to provide emergency aid through its local partners, while Age International will focus on providing food, water, shelter and medical care to older people and people with disabilities, who are often left out of emergency response plans.
