JERSEY’S new ferry operator DFDS says its technical team will work with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency on issues with one its fast vessels which resulted in Friday crossings between Jersey and France being cancelled.
Around 1,000 passengers have been impacted by the disruption with a revised schedule in place over the weekend.
Tarifa Jet – the vessel meant to run the St Malo to Jersey route – has been undergoing a refit in the UK but “due to technical issues” extra work is required, DFDS said.
Freight and passenger ship Stena Vinga will operate the St Malo route on Saturday and Sunday while Tarifa Jet remains in refit.
Following queries from the JEP about when Tarifa Jet is expected to be back in service, DFDS said: “Our technical team will be working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and we will update on a revised start date for Tarifa Jet as soon as possible.”
In a statement, the MCA said: “The vessel is currently undergoing surveys for the issue of a passenger certificate.”
DFDS Jersey route director Chris Parker said: “I am sorry that we have had to make these changes at short notice as I know that many people were looking forward to experiencing DFDS’ services for the first time, and that Islanders have plans to get away for longer breaks.”
Mr Parker admitted: “Obviously, this was not the start we had hoped for, but we will do our very best to minimize disruptions. We are contacting all affected passengers as soon as possible to find alternative arrangements.”
In a statement, DFDS said: “We apologise for the disruption this will cause to our customers travelling with us this weekend. All affected customers will receive a full refund and a voucher for a free return crossing in future and will also be able to move their bookings to alternative departures free of charge.”
