THE Jersey Construction Council has acknowledged the impact “that will be felt by many workers” following the recent closure of another building firm – but maintained the sector has a “wide range of professional tradespeople” with “good long-term career prospects”.
The JeCC expressed its “deepest sorrow” after Nicholson Builders director Michael Nicholson announced that the business had decided to cease trading.
Revealing the news on Friday, Mr Nicholson said the past few months had proved “extremely challenging” since the death of his father, Gary.
In a statement, the council said it would “like to express its deepest sorrow to those immediately impacted, including the directors, staff and their families, clients, sub-contractors and suppliers of Nicholson Builders”.
“In particular, the council offers its support to fellow members of the council who may be impacted by this matter,” the statement continued.
“The council will not comment on the causes or circumstances that may have led to the decision of the directors of Nicholson Builders to cease trading but understand that they had faced a challenging time since the unfortunate and sudden passing of the company’s principal.
“The council will though draw the Island’s attention to the impact that will be felt by many workers, from Nicholson Builders, their suppliers and subcontractors across the industry.”
Jersey’s construction sector has lost a number of firms in recent years.
K-Land Construction ceased trading with immediate effect in January, while Kalmac, MAC Energy and Eden Interiors – all part of the MAC Group – ceased trading last year, citing a “downturn” in the housing market.
This followed the collapse of building firms Camerons and JP Mauger in 2023.
The council’s statement continued: “Despite this and other recent business closures, the industry has a wide range of professional tradespeople, associated suppliers and consultants, with good long-term career prospects.”
It added: “The recent announcements regarding changes in some planning polices and the successful planning application for the new hospital are all encouraging. We will continue to work on site-ready projects of all sizes and for private and public sector clients to #GetJerseyBuildingAgain.”
