FRENCH and Jersey coastguards were involved in retrieving the body of a diver who was found in the water near the Minquiers reef on Monday morning.

The States police said that a local fisherman had seen the body and pulled it out of the water. The dead person was wearing a wetsuit and diving gear.

The fisherman alerted the Coastguard.

The RNLI’s St Helier lifeboat was out on an exercise at the time and immediately went to find the fishing boat and take over bringing the body to Jersey.

They were joined by States police and the Jersey Lifeboat Association before bringing the body to shore.

“We are now working in close co-operation with our French counterparts to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the States police said.

The French coastguard later confirmed that a diver had been missing from the north coast of Brittany for a week, since Monday 25 March.

The identity of the victim is yet to be confirmed and next-of-kin will be informed.

The States police sent their thoughts to the family and friends of the victim.
