THE crane on Gorey Pier has been temporarily taken out of service after recent inspections discovered a possible void beneath its support base.

Ports of Jersey said the structural issue was detected following ground-penetrating radar surveys, carried out ahead of the boating season.

Specialist contractors Geomarine are currently investigating the area, which needs to be surveyed in more detail to determine the presence and extent of any void and to inform subsequent stabilisation work.

Inspections of the breakwater also found damage along several areas of the upper pierside wall, believed to have been caused by Storm Ciarán.

In a statement, Ports said storm defence specialists AECOM had been on the Island from 4 March to survey damage at St Catherine – and would also be asked to undertake surveys at Gorey.

“The Gorey Boat Owners’ Association and local marine traders have been kept informed of the situation and contingency measures are being investigated for any boat owners whose vessel needs to be lifted in or out of the water while the crane is out of service,” the statement continued.

“Pre-season work at Gorey also includes new fuel berth pontoons, a refurbished dinghy pontoon, repairs to the dinghy slide and new visitor mooring signage.”
