Travel disruption in Jersey as severe weather strikes

FLIGHTS were severely disrupted, and several roads were blocked by fallen trees, as the Island was hit by more severe weather yesterday.

A number of arrivals and departures were cancelled or delayed by hours after gales from the north created dangerous crosswinds at Jersey Airport.

And a British Airways flight to Heathrow left without baggage as wind speeds were above the safe operating limit for the ground loading equipment.

Motorists also faced delays after fallen trees made roads – including Vallée des Vaux near Waitrose and Route des Issues in St John – impassible.

The strong winds and downpours came following weeks of unsettled weather, which has seen a total of 116.7mm of rain recorded so far this month – well above the February average of 78.4mm.

The wettest February on record was in 1957, when 170.5mm of rain was recorded.

Although today was expected to be mainly dry, further wet and windy weather is forecast for the rest of the week.
