Manager at drug addiction charity shop admits smuggling cannabis into Jersey

A MANAGER at a drug and alcohol addiction service charity shop has admitted smuggling drugs into Jersey.

Richard Thomas Rawlinson, who worked with the Silkworth Group, admitted bringing 25 grams of cannabis resin into the Island on 15 October last year.

Rawlinson (52) was a retail supervisor with Silkworth, in charge of their fundraising furniture shop.

Legal adviser Harrison Gollop, prosecuting, told the Magistrate’s Court that Rawlinson had previous convictions for possession of drugs dating back to 2013, 2002 and 1998.

The cannabis resin was for his own personal use, and Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, said Rawlinson had also been prescribed legal medicinal cannabis in the past. He told the court: “There are a number of things going on with Mr Rawlinson at the moment. He is still struggling with anxiety and his mental health.

“This is a man who has come a long way but by his own admission has set himself back.”

Magistrate Bridget Shaw said she was considering a prison sentence.

She told Rawlinson: “It is an aggravating factor that you you were a manager with Silkworth, a place helping people who are suffering from addiction.”

She adjourned sentencing until 12 March to allow time for a background report and released Rawlison on bail on condition that he surrendered his passport and driving licence and did not leave the Island.
