A RED wind warning has been issued for Jersey, with forecasts of 70mph gusts.

The warning – the highest level issued by Jersey Met – urges Islanders to “avoid outside activity” and “follow advice of authorities”.

By 9am on Sunday, the strongest gust recorded at Jersey Harbour was about 67mph.

Jersey Met says the strong to gale-force winds are expected to last until dawn on New Year’s Day.

A yellow-level thunderstorm warning has also been issued for Jersey.

The severe weather has disrupted ferry travel to and from the Island, with several crossings cancelled or delayed this week.

The ice-skate rink has closed for safety reasons until the wind decreases.

More gales are expected on Tuesday when another storm system is set to move across the British Isles.
