A 37-YEAR-OLD man who was caught speeding three times – with two of the offences committed within the same hour – has been fined £415.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that the first two charges dated back more than two and a half years.
In the early hours of 18 October 2020, Joao David De Jesus Costa was stopped after being caught driving his black Peugeot at 48mph along Victoria Avenue, which has a 40mph speed limit.
Forty-five minutes later officers pulled him over again, this time for driving at 40mph through the Tunnel, which has a limit of 30mph.
The third speeding offence took place at 7.50am on 6 May this year, when Costa drove at 52mph along Victoria Avenue.
Addressing the two offences committed in October 2020, Advocate David Steenson, defending, said: ‘Perhaps the traffic was low at that stage. It is not that uncommon to see cars driving at speed at that time of the morning.’
But the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, told Costa: ‘The limits apply, however many cars are on the road. To be caught twice within an hour shows a really flagrant disregard.’
The court fined him £65 for the first speeding offence on 18 October 2020, £100 for the second on that date and £150 for the offence on 6 May this year.
A further £100 fine was issued for a parking offence from last year. Costa’s licence was endorsed for three years.
