A FUNDRAISER in aid of those affected by the war in Ukraine is to be held in St Ouen’s Bay next month.

The Splash Out for Ukraine event will take place on 6 August at the Watersplash, with all proceeds going to humanitarian charity Jersey Side by Side and the Bailiff’s Ukraine Appeal.

The festival will start at 11am at the Splash Surf centre with the ‘Kookslam’ surfing contest – where the worst-dressed and best wipe outs win – and will also feature live bands, DJs, face-painting and other activities such as tug of war and ping pong.

The theme for the fundraiser is blue and yellow and there will also be an after-party – which Islanders can find tickets for by visiting the Splash Out for Ukraine Facebook page.

A spokesperson for Jersey Overseas Aid, which is responsible for distributing the money from the Bailiff’s Appeal, said: ‘While the war in Ukraine might no longer be front-page news, the needs are still very much there.

‘The Splash Out for Ukraine event at the Watersplash is the first of many events planned in August to raise awareness of the ongoing suffering in Ukraine and to provide opportunities for everyone, of all ages, to fundraise and show solidarity with those affected.

‘All proceeds from the event will go towards Jersey Side by Side and the Bailiff’s Ukraine Appeal and continue the incredible generosity of the Island that has already impacted thousands of lives.’

DJs will start performing at the Reggae Beach stage from noon and will carry on until 9pm, with the after-party due to take place inside the Splash from 10pm to 2am.

The scheduled music includes a range of styles including reggae, funk and soul as well as drum and bass performed by well known local artists.

Later in the month a series of activities will also be held as part of Ukraine Week and Islanders are being encouraged to organise their own fundraising events in pubs, workplaces or at home during the period.

The list of public events can be viewed online at sidebyside.je/ukraineweek.
