ISLANDERS have been reminded about the importance of taking measures to combat Covid-19 after latest figures showed that the number of known active cases had doubled within a week.
Data published by the government showed a total of 394 active cases were registered last Thursday, compared with the 170 on record seven days earlier, while fewer than five people in hospital had tested positive for the virus.
Meanwhile, the UK recently saw its first weekly rise in cases for two months.
According to data from the Office of National Statistics, a total of 989,800 people in private households were estimated to have had the virus in the week ending 2 June – up from 953,900 the previous week.
Commenting on the Jersey cases, Health Minister Richard Renouf said: ‘As we de-escalate from the pandemic, we do expect cases to fluctuate as we learn to live with the virus.
‘We have seen a rise in cases in the last few days, which Public Health is keeping under review.
‘Islanders are encouraged to keep doing lateral-flow tests twice weekly and guidance remains that if anybody has symptoms or has a positive LFT, they should isolate and book a PCR test.
‘Anyone who hasn’t yet had their vaccine, their booster, or their spring booster – if eligible – is encouraged to book now.’
The latest data regarding the Island’s vaccination programme have also been released, showing that a further 306 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were administered during the seven-day period ending on Sunday 5 June.
Health officials had encouraged parents of those aged five to 11 to book appointments for their children during the half-term holiday.
Take-up of the offer for the youngest eligible age group remained low, with a further 24 individuals aged five to 11 receiving their jabs during the week in question, taking the total so far to 380 – around 5% of Islanders in this group.
Booster vaccines have now been given to 74% of over-80s and 79% of those aged 75 to 79.
The vaccination centre at Fort Regent is open from Tuesday to Saturday, and appointments can be made at gov.je/vaccine.
