Postie lends a hand for special delivery

Alice Barnard, who started working for Jersey Post last year, had nearly finished her round on Saturday when she arrived at Field Farm in St Lawrence, where she discovered farm owner Jenni Liddiard having difficulty delivering a lamb by herself.

Luckily, Ms Barnard already had experience working on a farm and was more than happy to help.

‘It was a nice sunny Saturday,’ she said. ‘I wasn’t in a rush as I had loads of time – how could I say no?’

After donning some spare waterproofs, she got to work keeping the sheep steady while Mrs Liddiard attempted to deliver the lamb.

‘I wasn’t too fazed by it,’ Ms Barnard said. ‘It didn’t take as long as I thought it would. I was just trying to keep her calm.’

Mrs Liddiard said she had ‘never been more relieved’ than when Ms Barnard arrived, and had immediately asked her for help.

‘Her timing was perfect,’ she said.

‘I said Alice, would you spare two minutes to help me deliver this lamb?’

After just a few minutes, the pair helped the mother safely give birth to a healthy male lamb.

‘He’s bouncing around and waggling his tail,’ said Mrs Liddiard.

‘The mum was delighted.’

Ms Barnard added that it was ‘one of her favourite deliveries’ and that she was ‘very happy to be there’.

‘I wanted to stay afterwards but I had to finish my round,’ she added.
