The app – called My JE – shows the user how much electricity is being used in monetary terms as well as the number of units. It also allows the user to view up-to-date bills and account balances, set up a profile to compare electricity usage with other similar properties and set a weekly or monthly consumption target to help control costs.
It is available for both Apple and Android devices and was developed by the company’s own in-house billing provider JENDEV in partnership with Eliq – a Swedish provider of energy insights and mobile apps for utility companies.
Werner Bornman, Jersey Electricity’s head of digital technology, said the app was in the first of ‘several phases’ of its expected development.
‘Power utilities are increasingly becoming digital businesses, offering energy intelligence as a service and Jersey Electricity is at the forefront of this transformation,’ he said.
‘The next step is to develop the app’s functionality to embrace multi-meter customers, including those taking advantage of our Buy Back Tariff, as well as our three-phase customers.’
Chris Ambler, Jersey Electricity’s chief executive, added: ‘Our vision is to inspire a zero-carbon future. Energy efficiency and technology will have a big part to play on this journey. We are already increasing our focus beyond the meter and this is one of several projects that shows how we are putting customers at the heart of the energy system.’
He added that related technologies such as smart-home controls and vehicle-to-grid charging (V2G) were becoming ‘ever more widespread’ and that digital technology was viewed as ‘a key enabler’.
