Two fall foul of new Le Port parking ban

The parish of St Peter recently introduced the restrictions, which are in force between 11pm and 5am, following complaints about anti-social behaviour by campervan users in the area this summer.

Honorary officers said they had received reports of drinking and fires being lit, and that some motorists had ignored requests to move on
late at night during recent months.

Constable Richard Vibert said that a car and a van had illegally parked in the area on Saturday night and the owners are facing a fine of up to £75 at a parish hall inquiry.

‘They may not have to pay the full fine. That will be decided following a discussion between them and the centenier,’ he said.

‘It will depend on the circumstances – the vehicle may have broken down for example.’

Mr Vibert confirmed that the owners did not present themselves to honorary officers when the vehicles were inspected on Saturday night.

Last year, after concerns were raised about the behaviour of some people using Le Port, parking at the site was restricted to a maximum of 12 hours.

The States also adopted a proposition from Senator Steve Pallett to explore creating other sites for campervanning to help resolve the issues and relieve the pressure in St Ouen’s Bay.

Last week Mr Vibert said that executing the decision had been delayed by the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak, but that work would be undertaken when the pandemic eased.
