With good weather forecast over the coming days, the Coastguard is now asking Islanders to ensure they are fully prepared before going on the water.

Jamie Dollimore, Jersey Coastguard and Vessel Traffic service manager, said: ‘Over the weekend, Jersey Coastguard co-ordinated four search and rescue incidents relating to leisure boats experiencing difficulties in our waters. Fortunately, all of them were recovered safely and no casualties were reported.

‘The incidents ranged from water ingress to engine failure as well as running out of fuel. All vessels were safely escorted back to port.’

He added: ‘We would remind boat owners to make sure their vessels are properly maintained, to carry correct safety equipment for all on board, have a means of calling for help such as a VHF radio and that they undertake suitable passage planning and checks prior to heading out to sea.’

In a single day during the Liberation Day bank holiday weekend, Jersey Coastguard reported having to deal with nine rescues. This included co-ordinating a response to four incidents where vessels had broken down at sea, two where people had become cut off by the tide and two where kayakers and paddleboarders had become overcome by wind and strong spring-tide currents.
