Over 200 volunteers express interest in staffing field hospital

Over 3,000 Islanders have volunteered to support the community during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that those who volunteered would undergo intensive training as healthcare assistants in the new temporary 180-bed hospital being built on Millbrook playing fields. Their responsibilities may include moving people and equipment around the hospital, feeding and washing patients and offering reassurance to patients who have been admitted to hospital.

Alan Le Pavoux of Volunteer.je has said that over 200 have come forward.

In a letter to volunteers who have signed up to donate their time and skills, he said: ‘A huge thank-you to everyone who came forward regarding the healthcare assistant roles at the new Nightingale Hospital.

‘Following my email last week, over 200 people have expressed interest in the roles, ten of whom are already undergoing training ready to help those in need.’

A number of the 3,000 who have stepped forward to volunteer for charities and individuals are yet to be called upon. However, Mr Le Pavoux said everyone would be needed.

He has also issued a list of things that people could do before being called up to a designated role.

He added: ‘If you’ve registered on Volunteer.je and you have not yet been contacted about a role, please do not worry. If you are receiving this email we have your details and we will let you know when you are needed.

‘Due to the unpredictable nature of the spread of the virus, it is essential that we are ready to support those in need for the duration of the outbreak.

‘Voluntary and community sector organisations are in regular contact with us. They are reassured by the support we have available and grateful to you all for coming forward.’

He advised people wanting to help to check on friends, family and neighbours regularly, particularly if they live alone.

He added: ‘Loneliness can be a real challenge and a friendly voice can make all the difference. If you speak to someone who needs more practical help or information, the Connect Me page on the government website is a great source of information. You can also request help for someone else.

‘If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team by emailing help@volunteer.je.’
