Red carpet rolled out in celebration of style stars

At the event this week, which was held to showcase the Island as an international style and culture-rich destination, 13 local businesses and individuals were honoured for their contribution to Jersey’s art, hospitality, lifestyle, heritage and fashion scenes.

Four special awards were also presented to non-Islanders at the red carpet event, with Richard Quinn named Emerging Designer of the Year, designer Pam Hogg was inducted into the Style Hall of Fame and Prada was named International Brand of the Year.

Jersey resident Paul Sykes was also named Philanthropist of the Year and presented with his award by his long-time friend, explorer Sir Ranulph. Mr Sykes has funded many of Sir Ranulph’s challenges, which have raised money for Marie Curie, a UK charity that provides support to people with terminal illnesses and their families.

The explorer regaled the audience with the story of how the pair first started working together while he undertook an epic challenge to complete seven marathons in seven days on seven different continents – just months after suffering a heart attack.

Speaking to the JEP after being presented with his award, Mr Sykes said he had taken to the Island since moving here and was firmly committed to working with local groups, such as the National Trust for Jersey and Birds on the Edge, on environmental issues.

‘I am not trying to change anything, I am trying to help,’ he said. ‘I have obviously taken to the Island and its people – we have wonderful history and great traditions.’

He also praised the ‘incredible’ individuals and volunteers who work hard on environmental issues locally.

Meanwhile, Tim Phillips, the general manager of the Club Hotel & Spa, which was named Boutique Hotel of the Year, said: ‘Sometimes you just need to celebrate the success that Jersey has. We are all so busy operating that sometimes we need to stop and breathe and observe.’

Brian Smith, from the Blind Pig Speakeasy, which won Island Bar of the Year, said he was ‘elated’ that the business had been honoured.

‘And I am excited for my staff,’ he said. ‘They are the people who make this happen. It is about believing in people on the ground; it is not about the people at the top.’

The event at the Royal Jersey Showground, which was organised by Hartmann House and its founder Tessa Hartmann, included a surprise performance from singer, model and talent show judge Ms Dixon.

Other celebrities who attended included models Alice Dellal, Tuuli Shipster, The Only Way Is Essex star Ms Collins and restaurateur Jean-Bernard Versini, the ex-husband of Cheryl Cole.

A host of international and local companies supported the awards, including private aviation management company Ortac, luxury jeweller Chopard, Hettich, Duval Leroy Champagne, Bombay Sapphire Gin and Franklin & Sons soft drinks.

The winners were chosen by a public vote, having been shortlisted from 54 entries across all categories by a panel of judges.
