The former St Michael’s School student’s Wikipedia page was recently changed to say he had died on 3 March.

To prove he was still alive, the Hollywood actor posted a picture of himself on Instagram along with the caption: ‘When you learn that you died 2 days ago.’

He uploaded the image alongside a screen shot of the premature death notice.

Mr Cavill, who is best known for starring as Superman, was inundated with messages from relieved fans.

‘Thank lord you are alive,’ said one supporter. Another added: ‘Glad to see you alive and well. Live life and be happy.’

Mr Cavill has recently been filming for the new Mission Impossible film alongside Tom Cruise. The film is due to be released later this year.

He is not the first actor to suffer a death hoax. Earlier this month, Sylvester Stallone joked that it was ‘great to be back from the dead’ after false reports began circulating that he had died from prostate cancer.

Meanwhile Star Wars actor Mark Hamill tweeted a fake memorial picture of himself in response to rumours he had died.

Mr Cavill is an ambassador for Durrell and has taken part in several fundraising events for the charity.
