The telecoms firm had intended to bring in the charges for its PrimeTalk customers – a discounted phone service for senior citizens – in 2021, but has now dropped the proposals.

Under the plans, customers would have been asked to pay an extra £1.25 to receive a paper bill, or to settle their bills by a method other than direct debit.

JT was heavily criticised for the plans and the issue was raised in the States.

Business customers, new customers and those moving onto a new tariff will, however, now have to be pay an admin charge for all non-direct-debit payments.
