His collection included the unforgettable black beaded and sequined dress worn by Monroe in ‘Some Like it Hot’, which sold for $375,000; a stage gown the actress wore in ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’; and the ‘wiggle dress’ designed for the thriller ‘Niagara’, which sold for more than £60,000.

A pair of rhinestone earrings worn by the film star in ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’ and a pair of sequined opera gloves seen in ‘The Seven Year Itch’ were also among the items that were sold.

At the same auction the famous dress worn by Monroe when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to John F Kennedy, not owned by Mr Gainsborough Roberts, sold for a world-record price, fetching £3.87 million.
