Career criminal hurt in leap from stolen speedboat is spared prison

His defence counsel told the Royal Court that the 31-year-old, who has spent most of his adult life in prison, committed the theft in an attempt to get arrested or kill himself.

Advocate James Bell, defending, said that while the accused was in the water he was starved of oxygen and has been left suffering tremors. The condition may affect him for the rest of his life, the court heard.

The Crown had called for him to be jailed for 27 months. However, the defendant, who has 32 previous convictions relating to 216 offences, was given an 18-month probation order.

As part of the order he must attend appointments with the Alcohol and Drugs Service and submit to random drug tests.
