The petition accuses the States-owned Jersey Development Company, which is behind the second rink, of creating ‘unfair competition’ and suggests that the enterprise is likely to be challenged by the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities.

St Helier Waterfront Action Group, which set up the ‘Please use your powers to ensure the Ice Rink remains at Fort Regent’ petition addressed to Senator Ian Gorst claims that because the JDC has no rent to pay and ‘no responsibility to make a profit’ it can undercut the Fort Regent prices.

The online petition – which had already attracted more than 900 signatures yesterday – comes after Keith Halstead, event director for Ice Skate Jersey, cancelled his Fort Regent operation this year after it emerged that an ice rink would be part of an Arctic Village at the Weighbridge.
