Writers have until midnight on Sunday to submit their work for the contest, which is sponsored by Rathbones Investment Management International and is being run in conjunction with the Jersey Festival of Words 2016.

With several cash prizes on offer to winners and runners-up in both categories, short stories and flash fiction, the clock is ticking for anyone wishing to submit their work.

The winners’ work will be performed on stage at a prizegiving ceremony at the Arts Centre on 2 October, the final day of the festival.

All winning entries will also be published in a supplement that will be included with the JEP during the festival.

Submissions should be sent by email to writingcompetition@jerseyeveningpost.com. Entries must include the writer’s name, age at the time of submission and phone number, and must be clearly marked for the correct category.

SHORT STORY (500 to 2,000 words)

This is for all genres and styles, but we hope to see some compelling, page-turning tales. There are four winners’ prizes of £100 for each age- group, runner-up prizes of £50 and third-place prizes of £25. The age categories are: six to eight, nine to 13, 14 to 16, and 17-plus.

FLASH FICTION (max 126 words)

This was launched last year with a maximum of 125 words to commemorate the JEP’s 125th anniversary, and this year writers have one extra word to play with. We are looking for snappy, clever writing. This is open to writers of all ages, but there will be one winner of £100, one runner-up prize of £50 and one third-place prize of £25.
