In what are thought to be the first cases of their kind to be reported in the Island, detectives have received reports of women allegedly being abused on dates in recent weeks after meeting men on the internet. One man has been charged, while other investigations are continuing.

The States police are today urging Islanders to consider the dangers of using such sites and to follow advice designed to keep themselves safe.

Detective Chief Inspector Allison Fossey said online dating apps, such as Tinder, Plenty of Fish and Match.com, could be playgrounds for sexual predators looking to take advantage of women.

The inquiry was launched following a JEP investigation into child sexual exploitation in Jersey in which reporters posed online on dating apps as a 14-year-old girl and following the paper’s investigation, six files were handed to the States police, who are investigating.
