Asylum-seeker smuggler due to be sentenced

Amanda Marreakhy was stopped at the Harbour on 30 January following a

crossing on the Condor Rapide from St Malo.

When Customs officers searched the Vauxhall Corsa they found her Iranian brother-in-law Amir Merikhi in the boot.

In the Royal Court on Friday, Marreakhy, who comes from Batley, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to arranging to bring her family member into the Island.

The 28-year-old, who travelled from the UK to Jersey for the hearing, was granted bail by the court and is due to reappear in the Royal Court on 4 June.

Earlier this month Amir Merikhi was sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court to a ten-week suspended jail term after pleading guilty to illegally entering the Island without leave.

The 29-year-old has applied for asylum in the Island and is currently having his application processed.
