The sector has come under increasing scrutiny in the past two weeks since 11.5 million documents were leaked to investigative journalists from the archives of Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, which specialises in setting up companies in offshore jurisdictions.

The leak has revealed billion-pound trails leading through various offshore finance centres, including the British Virgin Islands and Mauritius, connected to world leaders, Vladimir Putin alleged to be one.
