‘Silent killer’ poses high risk threat to one in four drinkers

Dr Susan Turnbull also said many people ‘tend to put their heads in the sand’ about how much they drink and that they were ill-informed about what a unit of alcohol is.

She warned the 27 per cent of Island drinkers, who are drinking at potentially hazardous or harmful levels, that they are at ‘high risk of developing permanent liver damage’ – an illness which often has no symptoms until it is too late.

Hazardous drinking is defined as carrying the risks of physical and psychological harm, while ‘harmful drinking’ denotes that damage to health is likely.

According to the 2015 Jersey Alcohol Profile, 76 per cent of alcohol-related deaths in Jersey between 2012 to 2014 were due to alcoholic liver disease.
