A handful of early côtils were planted before Christmas but farm workers are now back for the season and have been hard at work in the Island’s steep fields above Gorey Harbour and in St Ouen’s Bay.

William Church of the Jersey Royal Company said they were marginally ahead of progress in January last year and a prolonged dry spell would be welcome.

This weekend the weather is forecast to be drier and colder, with lighter winds expected, all of which is good news for farmers.

And if there is a frost, as forecast for the next few days, it will be too soon to do any damage
