On Christmas Eve, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were sentenced to death for raping Miss Witheridge and then murdering her and former Victoria College student Mr Miller with a garden hoe on Sairee Beach on the Island of Koh Tao in September 2014.
Claims that the Burmese nationals were tortured to extract confessions were dismissed by the court and the bar workers, who are in their early twenties, are now due to face death by injection.
After the verdict Mr Miller’s brother Michael addressed the international media outside the Koh Samui court and in a statement, declared justice had been done.
However, Andy Hall, international affairs adviser for the Migrant Workers Rights Network, which has been supporting the defence team, said their lawyers ‘strongly disagree’ with the court’s decision and were planning an immediate appeal.
