The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested shortly after 1 am and later charged by the States police.

He appeared in the Youth Court on Wednesday morning.

Following the short hearing he was remanded in custody at Greenfields until 29 September.

His case is due to be committed to the Royal Court on 4 November.

Police confirmed that the victim was a woman but would not release details of where the incident took place.

A spokesman for the Health Department said that the 23-year-old woman was taken to the accident and emergency department at 1.45 am on Tuesday and later moved to a ward.

Statutory reporting restrictions prevent the naming of children. Article 73 of the Children (Jersey) Law 2002 protects the identity of children in criminal proceedings, whether as an accused, witness or victim.

On application to the court by the media, a presiding judge has the power lift the restrictions but only under exceptional circumstances.
