The Jersey saltire is now available for users to select as an ’emoji’ – small cartoon pictures – that can be sent in messages.

It’s introduction comes after Apple issued its latest update for the operating system used on iPhones and iPads, called IOS 9.

Flag enthusiast Senator Philip Ozouf said it was a fun introduction for social media and other messaging services.

‘When I’m sending messages and things to people and want to use the Jersey flag, now I can,’ he said.

‘It recognises Jersey’s position as a quasi-independent state.’

An emoji is a small digital image or icon used to express an idea, emotion in electronic communication.

The flag will only be available once users download IOS 9 to their device.

A whole host of new icons have been added as part of the update and the Guernsey flag can also be found within the catalogue of new additions.

Senator Ozouf bought the biggest Jersey flag in the Island earlier this year, which was hoisted during the Island’s Liberation Day celebrations.

He later gifted it to Jersey Heritage and it is sometimes flown above Fort Regent at the signal station.

‘I think flags are symbols of nationhood,’ Senator Ozouf said. ‘It was exciting to find out it had been included in Apple’s latest update.’
