As reported earlier this week, the study, which was carried out by cheaprooms.co.uk, covered 40 destinations and ranked St Helier as the sixth most expensive place in the British Isles, while St Peter Port in Guernsey came third.

Edinburgh was ranked as the most expensive destination in the survey, which covered hotels and guest houses with at least a three-star rating, while Blackpool had the cheapest daily rate with an average price of £36.

Meanwhile, the study also found that rooms in London were only £1 more expensive than in St Helier, with the average daily rate stated as £96.

The JEP asked tourists what they thought of hotel prices in the Island:

Vivienne (48) and Graeme (46) Stevenson, travelled to the Island for a week from Leeds with their 10-year-old son James

‘IF we came back again we would look at staying in St Brelade or Gorey because at least you would have a beach view. For the price that we paid it was not worth it. We would come back again but not stay in St Helier. Our trip has been lovely but we could have got a holiday abroad for less and there would have been entertainment at the hotel. Ours was dated and did not feel like a three-star hotel. Although it was clean, we would have liked more for what we paid.’

Olivia (43) and David (45) Muldoon were on holiday from Manchester for eight days with their two children, Anya (11) and Imogen (7)

‘WE love Jersey. We come every year and have stayed in the same hotel room at St Brelade’s Bay Hotel. It is expensive per night, but the location is good and we are used to staying there now. It has become less hands on. A few years ago there was waiter service at breakfast and then slowly they are doing less. Now there is a breakfast buffet and you help yourself even to tea and coffee. We first came here because it was easy and just a short flight. We could go abroad on a package holiday for cheaper and longer but we choose to eat in expensive places and the prices are high here because of the quality. We have been here every year for the last seven years and have already booked our holiday for next August. We asked the kids if they wanted to go to Majorca next year but they said Jersey.’

Francesca (57) and Michael (53) Keogh visited Jersey from Blackburn for one week.

‘IT is expensive but you get what you pay for. The quality was good, the food was good – it was all excellent. The cleanliness here is unbelievable. There is no chewing gum on the concrete, no litter. Everything is really clean and for the quality that we got at the hotel, it is much better than London. It is about the same per night but you would not get a four-star hotel for it. It is more expensive than going abroad but we have had a much better time.’

Peter (61) and Jackie (61) Hall from London spent a week in the Island

‘WE thought the hotels were expensive. The whole Island was expensive. We expected more from our hotel – it was old-fashioned and it had not had any investment in recent years. It had an en-suite bathroom but even that had not been updated in 30 years. The holiday suited us because we would not go to Spain or anywhere like that. We enjoyed the scenery but taxis and tourist attractions were all expensive. It is not a cheap destination but we had a good time and we thought the Island was very clean.’
