Screens erected to block view after beach volleyball proves very popular

A black screen has been put on the road side of the volleyball court following concerns that spectators could be injured if they spilled out onto the carriageway.

The move comes after Games director Steve Bailey said that at one point on Sunday more than 2,000 people turned out to watch games on the court.

He added that the screen – which was put up on Monday afternoon with help from the States police – was put up for safety reasons.

Mr Bailey said: ‘We will not compromise on spectators’ safety or competitors’ safety. The screen is to separate the spectators from traffic and it’s very successful. It has brought those people who were stood close to the road into the volleyball area.

‘No-one has been stopped from watching the event. It has enabled us to reconstruct a walkway for pedestrians and enables the taxi rank to work and function properly.’

The court, which was created with 650 tonnes of sand from a St Ouen’s Bay quarry, will see up to 11 games a day played.

Mr Bailey said that he was pleased with the support that Islanders had so far given to the Games.

‘We are delighted with the way Jersey has embraced the Games and the number of people who are going out to see all the sporting events,’ he said.
