Mr Thomson earned national coverage for his effort, dubbed The Mast Walk, with the photos and clip of his jump quickly going viral.

He later described it as ‘the most stupid thing I have ever done’ and acknowledged that there were several things that could have gone wrong as he made his way to the top of the mast.

It follows a similar daredevil feat two years ago when he completed a ‘keel walk’ on the same boat.

Mr Thomson is best-known for finishing third in the Vendée Globe round-the-world solo race last year, making him only the third Briton to earn a podium finish in the high-profile event.

The sailor’s Tweet about his jump was shared hundreds of times – including an endorsement from four-times Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie.
