At least 2,300 people died and tens of thousands were made homeless after the country was battered by Typhoon Haiyan – one of the worst storms in history – on Friday.

Now Jersey’s Filipino community is encouraging Islanders to support the relief effort by joining them at a fundraising day from 9 am to 7 pm at St Thomas’ Church Hall on Sunday.

Meanwhile, an Islander with close family in the Philippines believes they are safe and well despite not speaking to them since Typhoon Haiyan devastated their town on Friday.

Edith Spence is hoping that a report that no one was killed in Dulag, a coastal municipality of around 50,000 people which is 36 km south of Tacloban, is accurate.

On Tuesday the JEP reported that Mrs Spence feared for the lives of her brothers and sisters, who had refused to leave the family home despite their sister, who has lived in Jersey since 2007, urging them to do so.

But the 45-year-old data administrator at Kleinwort Benson has since heard from a friend that her family are probably safe.
