At a reception at Government House hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and Lady McColl, tribute was paid to the courage of the woman who agreed to be the ‘face’ of this appeal.

On the same day that a giant photograph of 37-year-old Ellica Kaliff was due to be hoisted in the town centre, she was commended by Hospice chairman Dr Gari Purcell-Jones for her willingness to personalise the Life is Precious Appeal.

Ms Kaliff has breast cancer and the portrait of her by Steve Wellum carries the message that people should not ignore any unusual lumps, spots or blemishes, but should have them checked.

Dr Purcell-Jones thanked Ellica for sharing her courage and hope, and inspiring others with the message that life and time were precious.

The appeal, which is supported by the Jersey Evening Post, takes this message into the community, and is also asking Islanders to donate jewellery to Jersey Hospice Care, either in memory of someone or because they no longer needed it.

Dr Purcell-Jones announced that funds raised from the campaign would go towards the creation of a £23,000 consulting room in the new day hospice at Clarkson House.

Islanders are invited to donate jewellery made of precious metals or gemstones which can be handed in at Aurum Jersey, Catherine Best at the Windmill, Motor Mall, or Clarkson House, or be collected by contacting Fiona Walker on 07797 747721.
