Keep Sunday Special

From Edward Le Quesne.
I HAVE been a supporter of the Keep Sunday Special campaign since it was formed in 1985 by Dr Michael Schluter of the Jubilee Centre.
In the Sunday Trading Act 1994 larger shops in the UK were permitted to open for up to six hours between 10 am and 6 pm, keeping Sunday a little special. KSS helped to defeat an attempt in 2006 to further extend the hours.
In Jersey a sensible review of Sunday trading laws a few years ago removed anomalies about what could be sold on a Sunday and restricted large shops to five days a year of limited Sunday opening.
I believe Sundays in Jersey still give the chance of a shared day for family and community activities.
We should resist any attempts to weaken this by allowing large shops to open more often on Sundays. Some values are more important than seven day shopping.
