Roley McMichael says that the problem was highlighted at the recent European Championships when the Island team was beaten by teams which received generous state funding.
He says that Jersey already punches well above its weight in many sporting arenas, but that with adequate support the Island could produce world champions.
‘To put this into perspective, the three teams ahead of us, France, Portugal and Spain, are made up of professional surfers and with a full complement of back-room staff, including doctors, physios and media people. The French received €4 million from their government,’ said Mr McMichael.
Mr McMichael’s comments have been echoed by Jersey-born longboard champion Ben Skinner, who last week came second in the World Championships.
