Adults and children over the age of nine, many in fancy dress, will run two laps of a course through St Helier for the event, which is part of the annual Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon.

The fun run, which is sponsored by the JEP, starts at 10 am. There are four main age categories, 9-12, 13-15, 16-18 and 19+.

Kate Power, assistant race director, said: ‘Fancy dress isn’t compulsory but there are prizes for the best fancy dress.

‘We are expecting about 450 people to take part so it is good. The fun run goes down the streets of St Helier and they get to go down King Street and it is a really fun thing to watch.’

This year, a new project has been launched in conjunction with the JEP and Total Sport, to encourage schoolchildren to remain active while having fun at the same time.

The Island’s primary schools were asked to enter teams into the race and send a creative photo of their fun runners to the Standard Chartered marathon team, so that they could be judged by the JEP. Nine schools have entered teams into the race.

The winner of the photo competition will receive £500 of vouchers for Total Sport.

Ms Power said: ‘We just wanted them to do a photo that they thought showed sport to be fun and we have had some really great photos. We have had nine schools take photos and the other schools said they would like to enter next year.

‘It is a way to get children active and involved in sport and encouraging them that sport can be fun and that it doesn’t have to be a chore.’

The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon is also made up of a 26.2 mile run and a relay race, with more than 2,000 people expected to take part.
