And the Island’s biggest trade union says that it cannot ‘name and shame’ employers who abuse the contracts because workers fear they will lose their jobs.

The head of Unite the Union in Jersey, Nick Corbel, has reacted angrily to assertions from Chamber president James Filleul that it would be ‘disrespectful’ to employers to end the use of zero hours contracts.

Mr Filleul said the contracts give employers flexibility and if they disappeared it would make life more difficult for firms finding it hard to stay afloat in today’s difficult economic climate.

The union leader has called on the Chamber of Commerce to ‘publicly distance itself’ from employers who abuse zero-hours contracts and deny people basic workers’ rights.
