Homes were evacuated ahead of the explosion of the 12 ft-long bomb, which contained about 850 Ib of explosives and weighed just under a ton.

The blast was recorded by the Jersey Met Office earthquake indicator and was registered on seismometers in Cornwall and Dorset.

Hundreds of Guernsey Islanders watched the detonation, which occurred just after 8 pm last night, a mile away from the shore of Fermain Bay.
