The Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, told the crowd of thousands who had gathered in Liberation Square that the Red Cross held a special place in the hearts of Islanders for sending essential food parcels to Jersey during 1945.

And the Island’s links with the global charity were further cemented with the return of a team of cyclists who are hoping to have raised £50,000 for the Red Cross after cycling to St Helier’s twin German town of Bad Wurzach, where deportees from the Island were interned during the Occupation, and back.

In the afternoon, a poignant memorial service was held at Westmount to remember the 101 slave and forced labourers who died in Jersey while working to build German fortifications.
