In the House of Commons yesterday evening MPs voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill by 400 to 175.

If the bill becomes law it will mean that same-sex couples, who are currently able to enter into civil partnerships, can get married in both civil and religious ceremonies. However, the latter will only be allowed with the consent of the religious institution concerned.

Following the vote Senator Ozouf, who is currently out of the Island on holiday, took to the social networking website Twitter to express the hope that Jersey would now follow the UK in moving towards equal marriage.
