Senator Sarah Ferguson, the chairman of the Corporate Services Scrutiny panel under whose remit such a review would fall, said Members needed more information about what such a role would entail before they could consider introducing it.

As a result, she confirmed that the matter would be discussed during a closed meeting of her panel on 14 January, when it will set its programme of work for the next few months.

Her comments follow the revelation last month from Chief Minister Ian Gorst that he is preparing to lodge a proposition with the States to establish an external relations ministry.

He confirmed that he had just one man in mind for the job – Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, but the House would have to approve that appointment.
